Message from Faculty Head of House, Dr. Gregory Melchor-Barz (aka "PBarz")
Welcome to North House, a residential house in the historic neighborhood on The Commons at Vanderbilt University. The House consists of 6 floors (each with a Resident Assistant or Head Resident), Faculty Head of House apartment, seminar room, atrium, kitchen, 4 study lounges, and lobby. One of the most interesting architectural features of the House is Faculty Head’s Portico overlooking the Peabody Green, a hangout for North residents.

As a medical ethnomusicologist I have lived, taught, and worked in a variety of countries in Africa. My research focusses on issues related to music, health, and healing. Recently I concluded ten years of research in Uganda that led to books, articles, and recordings documenting musical responses to the HIV crisis. My recording, Singing for Life: Songs of HIV, Hope, and Healing in Uganda was recently nominated for a Grammy award in the Traditional World Music category (yes, it’s true, Jay-Z’s digits are in my speed dial!). I recently completed a documentary in Rwanda, Central Africa, with a former North House resident. My current research agenda has me working in the countries of Aruba and Israel with programs addressing politics, music, and identity.

My daughter Lucy (16) lives with me in North along with husband Wil Melchor-Barz (aka the "Duke of North"). Son Simon (20) is a junior at Belmont University down the block. Our latest family addition is the "house dog" whose name is ANCHOR. Why "Anchor"? You'll figure this out when you meet her. She likes to jump up on you and you are forced to shout out what? "Anchor DOWN!"

Jessica Gil’s perspective on living in North House (Class of 2012)
My favorite North House memories are of Northern Exposure nights (seriously look forward to those…the Taboo matches are especially entertaining), of a pottery class with all my hall mates, of an Ethiopian dining experience (followed by dessert—true to American cuisine—at a donut shop ☺), and of “schmoozing” (that’s a word you all will come to know very well) with many distinguished North House guests, including Dr. Sylvia Tamusuza, an African ethnomusicologist. In addition, I was even able to help Dr. Barz produce the Music in The Commons CD, which was a very cool experience.
