Performing Religion
Performing Religion: Negotiating Past and Present in Kwaya Music of Tanzania was published in 2003 in Amsterdam by Editions Rodopi.
Performing Religion is a radical revision of my doctoral dissertation on post-colonial music production along the Indian Ocean coast of East Africa, specifically among Lutheran choirs in Tanzania. It is a text I am quite proud of, not just because it is my first full-length ethnography. I found the "coming to grips" with difficult and under theorized musical traditions to be a challenge. I later reconciled many issues with which I was grappling in this book in an article in The World of Music.
